NCAA Bracket Challenges

According to the Washington Post, office pools, despite the warnings of law enforcement officials, are among the country’s most popular illegal activities. The FBI estimates that roughly $2.5 billion is gambled on the NCAA tournament, and only $80 million is bet legally through Nevada sports books. A good portion of the rest takes the form of $5 or $10 entry fees to participate in a bracket-pick NCAA tournament pool.

Though I do not condone office betting, here are three non-office pools you may interested in:

The Costa Basketball Pool: My favorite NCAA challenge. No picking winning teams for every game. Instead, you pick, in order, 16 teams you think will go the furthest in the tournament. Every time your #1 team wins, you get 16 points, every time your #2 team wins, you get 15 points, and so forth. Just becuase your number one team is out early doesn’t mean you still won’t win.

The pool is $10 per entry, top three places split the entire pot based on a percentage. Email my mother, who organizes this at rjd15@juno.com by Tuesday morning.

Carolina Brewmasters Beer Challenge: A typical bracket chaleneg organized by CBS Sports with an atypical prize. A 22 ounce bomber of beer is the entry fee and the winner takes all. Also, the winner typically hosts a party after the tournament as well. And yes, I did win 19 bombers last year. You must live in the Charlotte area and email bbeauchemin@carolina.rr.com for more information.

Red Cross March Madness bracket challenge, hosted by the Gaston Jaycees. Think of this as a donation to world relief funds. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for top bracket winners, though most of the portions will support the Red Cross. $20 per entry. Must pay a Gaston Jaycee (I take Paypal).
